Julia Fiona Roberts is the daughter of Betty Lou Bredemus, and Walter Grady Roberts. She was born on October 28, 1967, in Atlanta. The fourth generation of the Roberts generation that has lived in Atlanta from her grandfather who was a farmer, John Pendleton Roberts. The father of her mother took his first steps towards the theatre. While a student of Emory University, he performed in several productions in Atlanta. He joined the air force in the year 1953. While being stationed at Biloxi Mississippi, he appeared in an army production that featured Betty Lou Bredemus who was also in the air force. In 1955, the couple tied the knot and in 1956 their child Eric Anthony was born. In 1957 the couple left the air force and Walter enrolled at Tulane University in New Orleans Louisiana. In 1960, the family relocated to Decatur Georgia where Walter began working with Atlanta's Academy Theater and the Harrington Scenic and Lighting Studio. In 1964, Walter along with Betty Lou began production on a local Saturday morning children's TV show titled Bum Bum and His Buddies that they funded themselves. They also founded the Actors and Writers Workshop in the same year, which lasted six years. In 1965, they welcomed two young children, Lelisa Billingsley as well as Julia Billingsley.
